Avro

The history of an aircraft company in photographs

Harry Holmes

The History Press, 1 February 2017

This is a landscape format paperback reissue of a tome first published in 1999. Holmes is a specialist on this Manchester-based manufacturer that was eventually subsumed into British Aerospace, and has written several other titles on the company. A former employee, he is chairman of the Avro Heritage Centre.

The extensive introduction gives a potted history of the company, which AV Roe first established in 1910. If you want a full insight into the interesting fellow that was Alliott Verdon Roe, I would suggest the esoteric

The Challenging Sky - the life of Sir Alliott Verdon-Roe, by L. J. Ludovici published by Herbert Jenkins in 1956.

After the introduction the current title is a selection of archive photos with complete captions. The company is of course best known for the 504, the Lancaster and the Vulcan, but this book covers the lexicon of their designs.

Presumably most of the photos come from the Avro/BAe archive; if so it is a rich resource that Holmes has mined well.
